Behavior Support

The Behavior Support and Special Programs Section in the Exceptional Children Division at DPI provides technical assistance and access to assist local education agencies and others in the management of federal grants, preschool programming, allocation of state and federal funding, special projects, and funding for children with disabilities. This section assists school systems with developing programs and services for students who have been identified as having a behavioral or emotional disability and other exceptional children who have discipline problems and severe behaviors. The Behavior Support and Special Programs Section has also taken the lead in implementing Whole School Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Programs in North Carolina.

Program Improvement and Professional Development

Contact: Paula Crawford, Section Chief
The mission of the Program Improvement Professional Development Section is to support quality personnel development that promotes research-based, differentiated instructional practices for all children.

Sensory Support and Assistive Technology

Contact: Section Chief
To provide leadership and assistance to local educational agencies in the education of children with visual impairments and those who are deaf/hard of hearing and in the provision of assistive technology devices and services to all children with disabilities.

Supporting Teaching and Related Services

Contact: Dreama McCoy Section Chief
To provide leadership and direction related to academic support, related services and assessment of students with disabilities.  Priorities include: providing consultation and technical assistance regarding program and curriculum development for all low-incidence categories of disability, providing leadership and direction in the provision of related services to students with disabilities, ensuring the inclusion of students with disabilities into all large scale assessments, coordinating technical support for school psychologist and consultation regarding state policies and practice, providing guidance in the use of standardized assessments for identification of students with disabilities, and providing technical assistance regarding Medicaid billing.
