ASSISTANT DIRECTOR :: Sherry H. Thomas
DIVISION MISSION :: The mission of the Exceptional Children Division is to ensure that students with disabilities develop intellectually, physically, emotionally, and vocationally through the provision of an appropriate individualized education program in the least restrictive environment.
The purpose of the EC Division Strategic plan is to establish a framework that defines how the EC Division will provide customized support for special education programming. Through these efforts and joint collaboration, the primary benefactor will be the children who receive special education services in North Carolina. The plan is not designed to address everything the EC Division does day to day but to address focused concerns and create a two-way dialogue with our stakeholders.
Structurally to support this change, the EC Division will be creating Regional Teams, led by our Regional Consultants (RCs). The RCs will work directly and collaboratively with LEA administrators to address the needs of each LEA. Additionally, the RCs will serve as a case manager to help the EC Directors/Charter School Coordinators determine the kind of support their LEA needs, using the resources of the various Sections within the EC Division.
The EC Division will also work directly with families and advocates to provide more direct involvement in the process of implementing change. This will occur through specific efforts to involve parents and advocates in planning and implementation of trainings and in more consistent proactive conversations.
The EC Division is accepting feedback on the Division roles – what we are doing to accomplish the plan. The EC Division will share the plan with all of our stakeholder groups. Your feedback will help us determine if the Division is doing all it can to make successful changes. The form is designed to allow for feedback. Comments will be accepted online until January 15, 2014. Please review the document and provide feedback using this link.
